James Kirke Paulding (August 22, 1778 - April 6, 1860) was an American writer and, for a time, the United States Secretary of the Navy. He became a close friend of Washington Irving.
Along with Irving, Paulding was associated with the "Knickerbocker group", a group which also included William Cullen Bryant, Gulian Crommelin Verplanck, Fitz-Greene Halleck, Joseph Rodman Drake, Robert Charles Sands, Lydia Maria Child, and Nathaniel Parker Willis.

Text block firm. Text clean, toned with some spotting. Half leather with stamped gilt spine title. Marbled paper covered boards. No endpages, as produced. Hinges tender but intact. Moderated wear to edges and spine. Corners rubbed.

The text contains caustic remarks and scathing criticisms of English mores, government, landscape, education, and the arts. Pauldin's observations were based more on his reading than first-hand knowledge. Still the American public received the book enthusiastically.
