It provides a vivid snapshot of African colonial life in the last decades of the British Empire. Blixen wrote the book in English and then rewrote it in Danish. A Succinct and correct History of the Travels and Explorations of Henry M. Stanley. His perilous March to find Livingstone, his Explorations on the Congo, his wonderful Work in the Congo State; …… Complete History of His Latest and Most Interesting Expedition, the Relief of Emin Bey

Chicago: Standard Publishing Co., 1890.
Hardcover.: 8vo; v – 612 pages; Frontispiece, illustrations. 8 inches tall. Illustrated with 100+ Engravings.

Sir Henry Morton Stanley GCB (1841 –1904) was a Welsh-American journalist and explorer who was famous for his exploration of central Africa and his search for missionary and explorer David Livingstone. Stanley is also known for his search for the source of the Nile, his work in and development of the Congo Basin region in association with King Leopold II of Belgium, and commanding the Emin Pasha Relief Expedition. He was knighted in 1899.

The Emin Pasha Relief Expedition of 1886 to 1889 was one of the last major European expeditions into the interior of Africa in the nineteenth century, ostensibly to the relief of Emin Pasha, General Charles Gordon's besieged governor of Equatoria, threatened by Mahdist forces. The expedition was led by Henry Morton Stanley and came to be both celebrated for its ambition in crossing "darkest Africa", and notorious for the deaths of so many of its members and the disease unwittingly left in its wake.
