Towneley Hall is a museum that houses a variety of displays, encompassing natural history, Egyptology, local history, textiles, decorative art and regional furniture, together with an art gallery.

The art gallery includes a large collection of paintings, focusing on romantic Victorian and pre-Raphaelite art, with some earlier paintings. Of note are the gallery's Waterhouse paintings (including the original 'Destiny'), works by Poynter and Zoffany, and the ovine-themed paintings of 'Frozen Mutton' Farquharson. The Towneley family were an important Catholic family and once owned extensive estates in and around Burnley, the West Riding of Yorkshire, and County Durham.

Towneley Hall not only contains the 15th-century Whalley Abbey vestments, but also has its own chapel – with a finely carved altarpiece made in Antwerp around 1525. The hall was the home of the Towneley family for more than 500 years.

James Kirke Paulding (August 22, 1778 - April 6, 1860) was an American writer and, for a time, the United States Secretary of the Navy. He became a close friend of Washington Irving.
Along with Irving, Paulding was associated with the "Knickerbocker group", a group which also included William Cullen Bryant, Gulian Crommelin Verplanck, Fitz-Greene Halleck, Joseph Rodman Drake, Robert Charles Sands, Lydia Maria Child, and Nathaniel Parker Willis.

"The story of the Tower, from the alleged Julius Caesar Tower down to the present, is full of interest as a mere narrative of facts. When, however, the leading interests are set forth personally and dramatically with a pen almost as graphic as a pencil, and an enthusiasm which is infectious, the result naturally is a most readable and valuable volume.

Such a work as this of Mr. Dixon's will make the old walls live again, will inform or remind thousands of readers of what has occurred in Her Majesty's Tower, and will be welcome wherever some of the most tragic tales of England's growth and greatness are studied and admired."
