Showing the Mediterranean coast of what is now Algeria and Tunisia, to the Niger River and the Atlantic coast.

Folding map laid flat unattached on foam board. Some toning, wrinkling left side bottom 3 inches from edge.

Probably concerning the conflicts in Mauretania and the province of Africa Proconsularis during the early first century AD.

Gaetulien : The Romanised name of an ancient Berber tribe inhabiting Getulia, covering the large desert region south of the Atlas Mountains, bordering the Sahara.
Mauretania (also called Mauritania) was a part of North Africa corresponding to the Mediterranean coast of what is today Morocco and the Spanish cities of Ceuta and Melilla.

Mauretania Caesariensis was a Roman province located in northwestern Africa, in present Algeria, with its capital at Caesarea.

The Massylier ( Massylioi , latin Massyli ) were an ancient tribe in eastern Numidia . To the east bordering their territory ( Massylia ) at Carthage.
Numidia (202 BC – 46 BC) was an Ancient Berber kingdom in what is now Algeria and a smaller part of Tunisia, in North Africa. Numidia was originally divided between Massylii in the east and Masaesyli in the west.
Mauretania (also called Mauritania) was a part of North Africa corresponding to the Mediterranean coast of what is today Morocco and the Spanish cities of Ceuta and Melilla.

From "The Continuation of Mr. Rapin's History of England: From the Revolution to the Present Times" by Nicholas Tindal (a translation of Rapin-Thoyras's "Histoire d'Angleterre"), an atlas presenting a history of the military engagements and campaigns of the War of the Spanish Succession (1701-1714), as well as a series of maps of Europe.

The map offers a plan of the French city of Douai, with fortifications and military movements shown in detail.

An ornate cartouche appears in the upper left bearing the statement "Doway, a strong City in the Earldom of Flanders in the Low Countries, subject to the French."

Measuring approximately 20.5" x 16", are on laid paper, Displays light toning and folds. The maps show no punctures, tearing or markings. Rear of map blank.

Title cartouche with ornamental borders. Fold not prominently noticeable. bottom edge of map slight loss. [was edge of book]

Antique engraved map on laid paper shown in the corresponding images. This map, "Carte de la plaine de Troie levee en 1786 et 1787," was excised from Marie-Gabriel-Florent-Auguste de Choiseul-Gouffier's "Voyage pittoresque de la Grèce" (1782-1842).

This folding plate depicts the topography of the region of Troy, and features Alexandria Troas, Kara Dag (Black Mountain), Tenedos, and the Aegean Sea.

The artist is credited as Jean-Denis Barbie, and the cartographer as Louis-Francois Cassas.

Condition / Notes: This map, measuring approximately 26 1/2" x 20", displays some age/wear indications, including light foxing, toning concentrated in the margins and at the extremities, minor chipping, and two small closed tears at the foot.

Marie-Gabriel-Florent-Auguste de Choiseul-Gouffier (27 September 1752, Paris – 20 June 1817, Aix-la-Chapelle) was a member of the Académie française and the Choiseul-Gouffier family, French ambassador to the Ottoman Empire from 1784 until the fall of the French monarchy and a scholar of ancient Greece.

Jean-Denis Barbié said Barbié Bocage , born April 28 1760 in Paris and died in that city on 28 December 1825 Is a geographer and French cartographer, Dean of the Faculty of Letters of Paris, member of the Institute.

Louis-François Cassas, born on June 3, 1756, was a distinguished French landscape painter, sculptor, architect, archeologist and antiquary born at Azay-le-Ferron, in the Indre Department of France. (Information courtesy of Wikipedia)
