"The story of the Tower, from the alleged Julius Caesar Tower down to the present, is full of interest as a mere narrative of facts. When, however, the leading interests are set forth personally and dramatically with a pen almost as graphic as a pencil, and an enthusiasm which is infectious, the result naturally is a most readable and valuable volume.

Such a work as this of Mr. Dixon's will make the old walls live again, will inform or remind thousands of readers of what has occurred in Her Majesty's Tower, and will be welcome wherever some of the most tragic tales of England's growth and greatness are studied and admired." (Contemporary review from the Birmingham Journal)

From the Dust Jacket: R.J. Minney, British biographer and novelist, has now written a genealogy of the prime ministership, taking No. 10 as the vantage point from which he vies the intriguing progression of men and events.

The story begins in the days when Whitehall lay in marshy fields outside London and continues to be the formation of the Macmillan government.

He tells of the construction of the house by George Downing, a graduate of Harvard College in 1642 who returned to England to become an unscrupulous agent for both Commonwealth and Restoration; of the 'indispensable' Walpole and the men who followed: the Pitts, Wellington, Peel, Melbourne, Disraeli, Gladstone, Lloyd George and Churchill.
