...The Story of Burnt Njal or Life in Iceland at the End of the Tenth Century
, [Iceland; Folklore] Dasent, George Webbe
4 [Iceland; Folklore] Dasent, George Webbe ...The Story of Burnt Njal or Life in Iceland at the End of the Tenth Century

Edinburgh, Scotland: Edmonston and Douglas, 1861.
First Edition, First Printing.
Hardcover.
Illustrated with folding engraved maps & plans and 4 engraved plates (1 double-page)
The English translation of the Icelandic Njal Saga, which was written down in its present form by the year 1200 AD.

The first 200+ pages provide a historical background and description of the culture, government, religion, customs, etc. of the Icelandic Northmen (volume I).

The remainder of the work contains the Saga, which was an oral tradition of even remoter antiquity. Njal (ca. 930-1011) was burnt alive in his home, one of the last in a series of man-slayings, the result of an Icelandic vendetta, or blood feud

Bound in quarter-leather with brown cloth covers and gilt lettering/ruling along with raised bands on the spines. There is moderate external rubbing and wear, concentrated at the edges. The binding is solid.

There are library pockets and bookplates on the pastedowns. Evidently they were never checked out; so unused. The pages show mild age toning and scattered foxing/tide marking.

pp. 1 p.l., [v]-cciv, 256; 1 p.l., [v]-xiii, 507. 91 page index. Appendix on the Vikings, Queen Gunnhillda, and 10th century economics and money. Illustrated with folding engraved maps & plans and 4 engraved plates (1 double-page).

The author Dasent spent four years in Stockholm as secretary to the British envoy, Befriending Jacob Grimm, at whose encouragement he developed a life-long interest in Scandinavian literature and mythology. The introduction to this saga relating to Iceland contains important contributions by Gúdbrandr Vígfússon on the religion, superstitions, and organization of the Icelandic commonwealth.
