7 [19th Century Cuba] Humboldt, Alexander ...The Island of Cuba With Notes and a Preliminary Essay By J.S. Thrasher.

New York: Derby & Jackson, 1856.
 First Edition, First Printing. American.
 Hardcover.
397 pages with publisher's catalog. 7.25 inches tall.
With unblemished folding map of the island.

This volume is from Humboldt's "Personal Narrative" with the parts relating to Cuba. Of special interest is the chapter on slavery, which is prejudiced by the author’s views. Other topics include: physical aspects, climate, geography, population, sugar culture, agriculture, commerce, internal communications, revenue, etc.

The translator, an American resident in Cuba, has annotated the text and written an "Introductory Essay" to bring matters up to date.

Humboldt's quantitative work on botanical geography laid the foundation for the field of biogeography. Humboldt's advocacy of long-term systematic geophysical measurement laid the foundation for modern geomagnetic and meteorological monitoring.

Humboldt was one of the first people to propose that the lands bordering the Atlantic Ocean were once joined (South America and Africa in particular).
