After nearly killing himself with drink, Gough became a much in demand speaker on the subject of Temperance. Gough delivered some 9,600 lectures to more than nine million people in America, Canada, England, Scotland, and Ireland.

At his death in 1886, the New York Times wrote that he "was probably better known in this country and in Great Britain than any other public speaker."

Bindings tight and square. Text clean and bright. Moderate handling wear. Brown blind-stamped cloth, beveled boards with gilt titles. Small bookplate on front paste-down and a number written on verso of title page. 522 pages with publisher's advertisements.
