Chandlerís fifth novel featuring the private investigator Philip Marlowe, set in Los Angeles in the late 1940s. The novel centers on the younger sister of a Hollywood starlet and has several scenes involving the film industry. It was partly inspired by Chandler's experience working as a screenwriter in Hollywood and his low opinion of the industry. [wiki]

Basis for Paul Bogart's 1969 film Marlowe, starring James Garner, Gayle Hunnicutt, and Carroll O'Connor, with a brief role by Bruce Lee.

Bindings tight and square. Text clean, light even toning. Moderate handling wear with wear to edges of covers with breaks in the cloth at corners and near spine.

Dust Jacket designed by Boris Artzybasheff with price is in a new clear protective Mylar sleeve. Top edge has shipping with small loss top and bottom spine. White of rear panel has evenly age-toned. Underside has a small tape repair at upper portion of spine.
