Paul Frenzeny was born in France in 1840. He is said to have joined the French cavalry in Mexico. He and Jules Tavernier were commissioned by the American magazine Harper's Weekly to Travel from the East Coast to the West Coast to capture illustrations of the as yet undisturbed West, starting in 1873 and reaching San Francisco in time for the magazine to print his pictures of California from 1876 onwards.

In this issue which he is well-known for, he drew Chinese field workers gathering in the grapes in the Napa Valley, using artistic license to show them treading the grapes with their feet, a technique then used in France but not in California.
