Personal memoir recounts the experience of a Zouave trumpeter in the Crimean War. In addition to descriptions of camp-life and combat, the narrative includes short discussions of Florence Nightingale and the Sisters of Charity, as well as more information about medical services and hospitals in general.

The Zouaves were a class of light infantry regiments of the French Army linked to French North Africa. The Zouaves, along with the indigenous Tirailleurs Algeriens, were among the most decorated units of the French Army.
