The complete text, never before published, of Faulkner's third novel, which appeared in 1929 in a much shorter version as Sartoris and the first in his fictional Yoknapatawpha County. in 1927.
His publisher heavily edited the manuscript with Faulkner's reluctant consent, in 1927 removing about 40,000 words in the process. That version was published as Sartoris in 1929. When Flags in the Dust was published in 1973, Sartoris was taken out of print.
Douglas Day, writes in his introduction that Faulkner believed that this would be the book that would make his name as a writer. Although it was Sanctuary (1931) that first brought Faulkner to the attention of many Americans.
