Badé was commissioned in 1915 as literary executor of Muir's estate, and he immediately began to collect Muir letters of copies of letters, accumulating nearly two thousand in all. Muir was a prolific letter-writer.

According to his daughter, his first order of business each day was to answer letters and send out his on correspondence. His letters as first-hand reminiscences give and insight and understanding of Muir that can not be found in other sources.
