First Published in Philadelphia, 1807, it was widely sold in the South and West, and ran into ten editions. With its pleasant mingling of poetical quotations, anecdotes, sentiment and sound practical counsel, it was a valued possession on isolated plantations of the time. [DAB]

The author discusses topics such as: quinsy, putrid sore throat, mumps, pleurisy, rheumatism, dropsy, gout, Guinea worm, rickets, dispensatory receipts, and much more.

The Planter's and Mariner's Medical Companion was dedicated to Thomas Jefferson who had encouraged Ewell to go to Savannah and the author was the first to inoculate in Georgia.
