The story was based on a journal Porter kept in 1931 during her sea voyage from Mexico to Germany, and the characters in the novel were based on real people she met during the trip.

The 1965 film adaptation by Abby Mann was directed by Stanley Kramer and headlined a galaxy of stars including Vivien Leigh, Oskar Werner, Jose Ferrer, Simone Signoret, Lee Marvin and others. It won Oscars for cinematography and art direction.
