Condition:
Vol. I: light rubbing to covers, corners worn, shaken, binding split at center signatures, which are nearly detached; foxing mostly to front endpapers, frontispiece, first few pages, back endpapers and last few pages. Owner's labels on front and back pastedowns.

Vol. II: light rubbing to covers, corners worn, binding split at about three signatures in, and also about six in, with those signatures/pages nearly detached. Endpapers, frontispiece map, title page, and back endpapers with considerable foxing and toning, light foxing throughout. Owner's labels on back pastedowns.

An account of the English archaeologist's travels and discoveries in the Levant and Asia Minor from 1852 until 1859. The work provides details regarding Newton's studies and excavations in Calymnos; when the Mausoleum at Halicarnassus, one of the seven wonders of the ancient world, was excavated; Cnidus, Branchidae and Constantinople. In 1861 he was appointed to the newly created post of keeper of Roman and Greek antiquities at the British Museum.
