"Life on a Florida plantation, as described in memoirs and a diary; the latter paints a vivid picture of social and economic conditions" Nevins II, p.189.

The Pine Hill Plantation was located in Leon County, Florida [Tallahassee]

On November 1, 1866 Susan married Civil War leader, Nicholas Ware Eppes, "My Soldier in Gray" as she called him in her book "Through Some Eventful Years." She would not allow intoxicating drinks to be served to her guests at the wedding reception. On her mother's orders there were to be no wedding presents due to the impoverished south.

She was the granddaughter of John Branch, the last Territorial Governor of Florida. In 1920 she was elected Honorary President of Florida Division UDC (United Daughters of the Confederacy). Additionally the author is a descendant of William Bradford of Plymouth Colony.

One of the news clippings report that a governess in the home was found to be a missing daughter of the British King.
