Issued only fourteen years after Franklin's final expedition disappeared into the Canadian Arctic, this uncommon American edition was designed to introduce his remarkable career to a broad readership. 

Rather than printing the explorer's lengthy official narratives in full, the anonymous editor—identified only as 'D.W.B."—carefully condensed Franklin's earlier published accounts, allowing, as the preface explains, "Sir John Franklin tells his own story.' 

The volume concludes with an account of the final expedition and the search efforts already underway, transforming the work from a simple travel narrative into an early memorial of Britain's most celebrated Arctic explorer.

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Small octavo; 7.5 inches tall; 473 pages. Publisher's original brown cloth decoratively stamped in blind with spine lettering in gilt. An early American edition printed from an edited text prepared for popular circulation. Contemporary ownership inscription on the front endpaper.

CONDITION: Hinges remain secure though the central gatherings are slightly shaken. Heavy foxing is present on the preliminary leaves, with scattered foxing and spotting throughout. Cloth shows expected rubbing at the corners and spine ends. A solid example of an increasingly uncommon nineteenth-century American Arctic title.

BUILDING THE FRANKLIN LEGEND: 
Appearing while the fate of Franklin's expedition remained one of the nineteenth century's greatest geographical mysteries, this edition reflects the extraordinary public fascination surrounding the explorer. Intended for readers unable to obtain Franklin's scarce English publications, it distilled three decades of exploration into a single accessible volume while adding an account of the disastrous final voyage and the earliest search expeditions. It helped establish Franklin not merely as an explorer, but as one of the enduring heroic figures of Victorian exploration.

FROM EXPLORATION TO MEMORY: 
Unlike the official expedition narratives published during Franklin's lifetime, this edition looks backward, presenting his career as a complete story. The editor openly states that the work was prepared by selecting 'the pith' of Franklin's larger books and presenting them 'in a cheap and readable shape,' preserving the explorer's own voice while making his achievements available to a far wider American audience.

COLLECTING SIGNIFICANCE:
Although not an official expedition report, this volume occupies an interesting place in Franklin literature. It bridges the gap between Franklin's original narratives and the later documentary works of Hall, Schwatka, and others who sought to reconstruct the fate of the lost expedition. Today it represents an early example of how Franklin's explorations were introduced to the American public and how his reputation evolved into one of the defining legends of nineteenth-century Arctic exploration.
