Along with general descriptions of Sweden, Denmark and Norway, Landor denotes a contrast between Scandinavia and the Continent. In his chapter Poetry and the Philosophy of Travel Landor's demonstrated that he is a product of the Enlightenment and of the Romantic Period. His point of departure is the Eighteeth Century idea that travel is not only a leisure activity but the purpose is to improve the traveler. He is also critical of the Grand Tour Model.
