First American edition, translated by Mary J. [Jane] Serrano (precedes the 1894 Vizetelly translation) 471 pages plus 4 pages of reviews of Zola's The Downfall. 7.5 inches tall.----Light blue/cream textured cloth covered boards. Spine titles in dark drown in gilt box decorated, author and publisher in gilt. Front board has similar symmetrical form of early art deco design. Bindings square and tight, hinges strong. Some even toning to clean text. Light shelf wear, small open rubs at corners. Lower spine band pushed upper abraded. Some hand soiling. ------ Pascal is furthermore essentially a story about science versus faith. The novel begins in 1872, after the fall of the Second Empire and the end of the reign of Emperor Napoleon III. The title character, Pascal Rougon (b. 1813), is the son of Pierre and Félicité Rougon, whose rise to power in the fictional town of Plassans is detailed in the first novel of the series La fortune des Rougon. A very nice collectible copy of this seldom seen issue.
