A first-hand account of a private scientific expedition and voyage on the schooner "Marchesa" from Japan to the South Pacific. As a member of the Royal Geographical Society, Guillemard worked as both a naturalist and ethnographer.

This work is notable for its focus on lesser-known islands as well as important ornithological observations.

Publisher's blue decorated cloth with stamped titles and decoration in gilt. Bindings are tight and square. Text clean, light even toning. Moderate handling wear. The upper front corner of vol. 2 bumped. Armorial bookplate of C. W. Prescott Westcar and a small bookplate in the upper corner of front paste-down.

First Edition, First Printing. Two volumes, [Complete] 8vo; (230 x 157 mm). Illustrated with 2 colored frontispieces, 14 maps, 27 plates. The plates are beautifully engraved by Edward Whymper (of Matterhorn fame) from drawings by Charles Whymper.
