A handsome collectible edition of Victorian-era Egypt exploration. First American Edition.

Publisher's navy cloth with stamped gilt decorations on front, rear, and spine. Bindings tight and square. Top edge gilt. Text clean, light even toning. Moderate handling wear. Tissue-guards in place. A few plates have a hint of foxing on extremities.

Small 4to; 10.25 in. 26 cm; viii, 218 + [2] ad pp. 35 steel-engraved plates including frontispiece, two maps, and an additional illustrated title page, wood-engraved vignettes throughout.

The detailed illustrations were made by the author who was a British artist, best known for his numerous drawings rendered into steel engravings. Bartletts primary concern was to render "lively impressions of actual sights",
