Flagler built in 1901: The Colonial Hotel. On March 31, 1922 the hotel was gutted by fire. The Bahamian government gave a loan to the Munson Line, which purchased the land and built a brand new seven-story hotel, The New Colonial, on the site within six months. The hotel celebrated its grand opening on January 7, 1924. In 1932, the hotel was purchased by Sir Harry Oakes. The local legend is that Oakes bought the hotel on a whim, after experiencing bad service there. Oakes renamed the hotel the British Colonial Hotel. --------- Trivia: The hotel was used as a filming location for the James Bond film Never Say Never Again starring Sean Connery. The scene in Never Say Never Again where the character of Fatima Blush (Barbara Carrera) (not actually Kim Basinger as the source says) is waterskiing was shot in front of the resort and where she skis onto the end of the pier into James Bond's arms is the hotel's old gazebo bar. The pier was especially built for the movie Never Say Never Again, and the hotel wanted to keep it.------- Page 6 -7 Advertises arriving via the "Munargo" of the Munson Steamship Line. --------The Munson Steamship Line, frequently shortened to the Munson Line, was an American steamship company that operated in the Atlantic Ocean primarily between U.S. ports and ports in the Caribbean and South America. The line was founded in 1899 as a freight line, added passenger service in 1919, and went out of business in 1937. ------- SS Munargo was a commercial cargo and passenger ship built for the Munson Steamship Lines by New York Shipbuilding Corp., Camden, New Jersey launched 17 September 1921. --------- Munargo operated for the line in the New York-Bahamas-Cuba-Miami service passenger cargo trade. In June 1930 the United States and Mexican soccer teams took passage aboard Munargo from New York to Uruguay for the 1930 FIFA World Cup. The ship was acquired by the War Shipping Administration and immediately purchased by the War Department for service as a troop carrier during World War II.
