Laid-in two-sided signed hand-written letter dated 1831. The letter is written to the author with an unidentified signature.

Hall was a widely traveled naval officer who parlayed his adventures into a successful literary career. These three volumes contain a great deal of valuable information about the Royal Navy and early 19th century naval practices, and India and Indian colonization and trade. -------- A unique insight into life in the 19th century Royal Navy. The Third Series is very interesting as it describes Captain Hall's travels to India.

The first volume in the Third Series gives a brief account of the East India Company, as well as an opinion of the diplomatic negotiations with foreign governments. The second volume continues to give a flavor of the places he visited while in the Navy which include India, Spain, Galicia, Madeira and Bermuda. The third volume reviews various nautical topics. ...they make for quite light reading as they were meant to attract an audience whose knowledge of naval matters was minimal. That he tells a Story with clearness and energy describes manners and scenery with very considerable skill and effect seizes the strong points of a moral or political question, in general, with ready shrewdness, and delivers his opinions on all subjects fairly and frankly writes in a manly, unaffected style; rough but racy and makes us feel throughout that we are in the hands of a practical man, clever, humorous, kind- hearted, who has read much, seen more, studied and enjoyed life. [TQR]

A pretty set in full calf with spine labels, raised bands, and marbled edges. Each volume with an engraved title page. Bindings are very tight and square. Text clean, minor foxing on free endpages and engraved titles have toning. Minimal shelf handling wear. A Very Handsome set far better than is usually seen.
