The author was a Stanford University Professor of Horticulture, his impressive collection of prose and poetry of the history and significance of the California poppy is both beautiful and informative.

The text is illustrated throughout with floriated initial caps, head and tailpieces in the Art Nouveau fashion. Period photographs, drawings, and a tissue-guarded color frontispiece complete this tribute to the California Poppy. The binding design of two poppy motifs in gold is by T. V. H. Bull.

All of the art decorations are attributed and include Florence Lundborg (a member of the San Francisco group known as "Les Jeunes"), Marion Taverner, Arthur F Mathews (father of the Arts and Craft Movement). Albertine Randall Wheelan (elves) and Grace Irving. Most of the poetry and prose articles have the author's signatures in facsimile.
