John Tyndall while researching his 1860 work, The Glaciers of the Alps, became a proficient climber. This work, first published in 1871, is a combination of accounts of climbing expeditions in Switzerland together with a commentary on glaciation and geology. He writes compelling tales of Victorian climbing expeditions and its culture.

Tyndall Glacier located in Chile and Tyndall Glacier in Colorado were named after John Tyndall, as is Mount Tyndall in California and Mount Tyndall in Tasmania. [wiki]

He was famous in his day and still of interest with accounts of his continuous climbing career. [RHB] Tyndall was the chief opponent of Forbes in the glacier controversy.
