This handsome cloth-bound and gilt embellished title is enhanced by many woodcut illustrations and vignettes. A folding map is tipped in at the beginning of chapter two.
First Edition - Second Printing (All but 20 of the First Edition were destroyed in a fire. Ref: Bonhams), 8vo; xi, [1], [13]-552 pages. 12 engraved and lithographed plates, numerous wood engraved vignettes. The mezzotint frontispiece is by John Sartain, the folding engraved map of "Arctic Regions" by Schott.
Bindings tight and square. Text clean, light even toning the many illustrations are crisp and clear. Moderate handling wear. Cloth has sun-lightening on the spine and perimeter. All plates have tissue guards present.
Elisha Kent Kane was a medical officer in the United States Navy during the first half of the 19th century. He was a member of two Arctic expeditions to rescue the explorer Sir John Franklin. He was present at the discovery of Sir John Franklin's first winter camp.
