A railroad expedition guide for the rising middle class of vacationers from 1874 when steamboats and railroads were making vacation and travel an option. -


The frontispiece is a folding panorama by Alfred E. Waud. It is a full 11.5 feet long with 40 engraved panels displaying both sides of the river from Quebec to Cape Vincent, there is an additional section showing the Niagara River and Falls.


Bindings are tight and square. Text clean, light even toning. Moderate shelf handling wear. Cloth has sun-faded on the spine and front. Three-inch break in cloth at the top front joint, from the fold-out map; no loss to strength or structure. 8vo; 7.75 inches tall; 176, [66 ads] 6 folding maps.


The 1874 edition is bound in decorative cloth with gold embossing and includes 6-fold-out maps, illustrations and many period hotel and amusement advertisements. Though not the First Edition, the most desirable due to the maps.
