This appealing 1842 map of the Arabian Peninsula, with Egypt and Nubia was issued by William Lizars. It extends from the Mediterranean Sea and Syria south as far as the Horn of Africa and the Gulf of Aden. Beautifully detailed, the map notes several towns, cities, rivers, islands, coastal features, and topographical features.

Steel-engraved lithograph unbound map, with original hand color in outline. 50 x 39.9 cm. (19.75 x 15.375 inches), plus margins. Total Sheet measures 18.75 x 22.25 inches. Mild toning, slight wrinkles; closed tears on the widest part of margin which would not affect framing; some toning along the original centerfold and minor foxing else very good.
In Egypt and Abyssinia, ruins are identified. Several caravan routes, including the Route of the Great Caravan of Sudan from the Niger to Cairo is marked. Several interesting annotations throughout note locations for 'good water', 'bad water', 'bitter water', etc.
William Home Lizars (1788--1859) was an engraver and painter based in Edinburgh. After the death of father, Daniel Lazars, he took up the family engraving business and expanded into etching and copperplate printing. This lovely map is a fine example of his work.
