The Romanised name of an ancient Berber tribe inhabiting Getulia, covering the large desert region south of the Atlas Mountains, bordering the Sahara. Mauretania (also called Mauritania) was a part of North Africa corresponding to the Mediterranean coast of what is today Morocco and the Spanish cities of Ceuta and Melilla. Mauretania Caesariensis was a Roman province located in northwestern Africa, in present Algeria, with its capital at Caesarea.
