Henry Melson Stommel was a major contributor to the field of physical oceanography. Beginning in the 1940s, he advanced theories about global ocean circulation patterns and the behavior of the Gulf Stream that form the basis of physical oceanography today.
Volume I has essays written to shape oceanographic policy or to "set the seeds for future field programs." It also contains autobiographical material where the author describes his process of creative thinking and problem solving. He loved the challenge of unraveling the mysteries of the ocean. Volume II and III contain his purely scientific works.
