The novel first appeared in serial form in 1883. It was intended as the opening installment in an unrealized epic description of the fall of capitalism.  

Shaw was an Irish playwright, critic, polemicist and political activist. His influence on Western theatre, culture and politics extended from the 1880s through his death and to today.
