In both text and pictures (by Frank Dobias) this book is very successful in catching the feel of an old folk tale.

The Little Brown Hen had invited her friend the Rabbit to dinner. On the way the rabbit fell in with Red Fox, and in terror of his own life, betrayed his friend and let the fox take bits of white fur in an effort to disguise himself and so get into the house of the little hen. Fortunately, the pet in the chimney gives warning and the woodsman saves the day.
