Set in the late 1950s and early 1960s, the memoir follows Tommy's journey in a city divided by race and poverty. Attending Collegiate School for Boys on a scholarship, Tommy's world is limited to below 96th Street, where muggers and gangs lurk.
Yet, he gradually connects with a different East Harlem, finding friendship on basketball courts and at church, amidst the struggles of the projects and tenements.
Interwoven with the national Civil Rights movement, from watching the integration of Little Rock's Central High School to joining the 1963 March on Washington, Tommy observes the changing landscape of his community.
