The Deryni novels are set in Gwynedd, one of the Eleven Kingdoms, a fictional realm resembling the 12th-century British Isles. Governed by a feudal monarchy and influenced by a dominant Holy Church akin to the Roman Catholic Church, Gwynedd is home to both humans and the Deryni. The Deryni are a marginalized race with innate psychic and magical abilities, historically persecuted despite their capabilities.
The Camber of Culdi novels unfold eighty years after a Deryni prince from abroad invaded Gwynedd and dethroned the human king. Although a minority, the Deryni now wield authority over the throne, the Church, and nearly all centers of power in the kingdom, often enjoying privileges at the expense of the human majority.
Yet, simmering human resentment is growing, prompting a powerful Deryni lord to embark on a quest to revive the ancient lineage of the Haldane kings.
