Charles of Orleans is remembered in history as the French prince of the fifteenth century who fathered King Louis XII. However, his true legacy lies in literature where he is celebrated as a poet of originality and grace, surpassing the fame of his position as the Duke of Orleans. He also distinguished himself as a warrior, notably captured by the English at the Battle of Agincourt and held as a prisoner for twenty-five years, during which he produced some of his finest literary works.

Miss McLeod skillfully captures all facets of Charles' life, including his family relationships, diplomatic career, three marriages, and his establishment of a magnificent court at his palace in Blots. Her scholarship is matched by her clear and lively writing style.
