The Penitent is a novel by Isaac Bashevis Singer. It was originally published in installments in The Jewish Daily Forward with the Yiddish title of Der Baal Tshuve. The English translation was made by Joseph Singer for Farrar Straus & Giroux.

The Penitent tells the story of Jospeh Shapiro, his rapid climb to prosperity, his quick plunge into promiscuity, and his subsequent flight to Israel in order to find salvation.

He was awarded The Nobel Prize in Literature 1978.
