Wendy Hall visited Finland and wrote this book during a challenging period after World War II, when the country was recovering from conflicts with both the Nazis and the Soviets. Despite significant losses, including one-fifth of its arable land and the destruction of its northern regions, Finland retained its independence and democratic government.
Hall depicts the Finns as serious and focused on rebuilding, securing food, meeting Soviet reparations, and avoiding conflict. While she provides a summary of Finnish history and politics since 1918, her main focus is on Finland's economy and high culture, highlighting figures like Sibelius, the Kalevala, and Eliel Saarinen.
