A Maggot is a novel by British author John Fowles, his sixth major work and his last. The title, as Fowles explains in the prologue, is drawn from an old meaning of the word, referring to a whim, quirk, obsession, or even a fragment of music.

Set in the spring of 1736, the story follows four men and one woman, all traveling under false identities, as they journey through the Devonshire countryside toward a mysterious meeting. By the time the journey concludes, one will be executed, one will disappear, and the remaining travelers will face a murder trial.

Through the tangled web of truths and deceptions surrounding these events, Fowles weaves a novel that is at once a tale of erotic obsession, a meditation on the clash between reason and superstition, a dazzling literary feat, and the story of the emergence of a new faith. [Adapted from reviews]
