The Anatomy of Art: An Introduction to the Problems of Art and Aesthetics

New York: Dodd, Mead & Co., 1932. First Edition, First Printing. Hardcover with Dust Jacket. The first American edition of this foundational modernist study of aesthetic theory. Illustrated, with essays defining art, form, pattern, empathy, and abstraction. This copy is from the estate of publisher Ben Raeburn, with a few light pencil notes by him in text and maggin notes in ink on the first 19 pages.

Octavo, 8.25 inches tall, xii, [1]  bound in violet cloth with silver spine and cover titles. The bindings are tight and square; slight shelf lean. Text clean with a few light pencil annotations by Ben Raeburn. The dust jacket, though complete, shows edge chipping, moderate toning, and several tape mends to the verso—still serviceable and now protected in a clear Mylar sleeve. Presents well despite its fragility.

Herbert Read (1893–1968) was among the leading British art critics and philosophers of aesthetics, championing modern art’s psychological and formal dimensions. His writings influenced mid-century modernism, especially through his association with Henry Moore and Barbara Hepworth. This early treatise stands as one of his most concise expositions of aesthetic philosophy, bridging the gap between classicism and abstraction.

From the estate of Horizon Books publisher Ben Raeburn (1914–1997), a central figure in mid-century American publishing.
