Harper & Brothers — ‘Valuable and Interesting Works for Public and Private Libraries’
A single advertising leaflet issued by Harper & Brothers, New York, titled ‘Valuable and Interesting Works for Public and Private Libraries.’ The sheet lists newly available and standard works from Harper’s catalogue, including notable titles by Griffis (Japan), Reclus (Earth and Ocean), Hildreth (United States), Van-Lennep (Bible Lands), and works on pottery, caricature, exploration, and American history. These ephemeral inserts were placed loosely or sewn into Harper books during the early 1880s to promote the firm’s broader publishing program.
The sheet is printed in black with red vertical type along the left margin and paginated internally as pages 2–4, indicating it was extracted from a larger multi-page catalogue. Typography and listed publication dates point to production between 1883 and 1885.
Very Good. Light age-toning to margins with faint handling wear; no tears or loss. Clean, well-preserved example with strong impression and fully legible text.
Harper & Brothers routinely issued multi-page catalogues for insertion into their clothbound books beginning in the 1870s. These were replaced frequently, making specific printings difficult to date; however, cross-referencing publication dates of listed titles is the accepted bibliographic method.
Identification & Notes
+++ Advertised titles dated no later than 1883 (Griffis’s Mikado’s Empire, Book II), establishing the printing window as circa 1883–1885.
+++ Includes high-interest subjects in anthropology, geology, exploration, and American history, illustrating Harper’s shift toward global and scientific publishing in the late 19th century.
+++ Contemporary Harper & Brothers catalogue inserts are rarely found intact due to their ephemeral nature; most were discarded by binders or readers.
+++ Red-ink vertical line encourages the reader to request new catalogues—an early example of subscription-based advertising.
+++ Found laid into an 1897 volume, consistent with bindery practice of using leftover catalogue sheets as fillers.
