Emin Pasha and the Rebellion at the Equator: ... [Stanley's Emin Pasha Relief Expedition — Equatoria, the Mahdist Revolt & African Exploration]

New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1890. First Edition, First Printing.

A FIRSTHAND ACCOUNT OF STANLEY'S EMIN PASHA RELIEF EXPEDITION.

Arthur J. Mounteney-Jephson, an officer of Henry M. Stanley's Emin Pasha Relief Expedition, recounts his experiences in Equatoria during the political and military upheavals surrounding Emin Pasha's administration. His narrative documents rebellion, shifting political loyalties, and the difficulties of European exploration and intervention in Central Africa.

The volume is particularly appealing for its documentary illustrations, including portraits of Mounteney-Jephson and Stanley, a folding map of Equatoria, and a facsimile of the Mahdi's Arabic letter.

HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE: THE EMIN PASHA RELIEF EXPEDITION AND THE COLLAPSE OF EQUATORIA.
Mounteney-Jephson's account is an important primary source for the Emin Pasha Relief Expedition, organized under Henry M. Stanley in 1887. The expedition sought to reach Emin Pasha, whose administration in Equatoria had become isolated during the Mahdist uprising in Sudan.

Jephson's narrative offers a close account of the rebellion against Emin Pasha, the uncertain loyalties of soldiers and local authorities, and the political complexities encountered by the expedition. His observations also preserve geographical and ethnographic details of Central Africa at a time of accelerating European imperial expansion.

The book remains significant both as an eyewitness narrative of late-Victorian exploration and as a record of the contested political circumstances surrounding European intervention in the region.
