As late as the 1890s, the Everglades were a mystery to mapmakers. Hugh L. Willoughby, a 'gentleman explorer,' set out in January 1898 to chart the remote southern region—territory known only to the Seminole Indians. His account reads like an adventure novel but provides the first detailed technical and scientific data of the region, including water analysis and wildlife categorization.
