I, the Jury [Inscribed First Edition — The Debut of Mike Hammer — Landmark of American Hardboiled Fiction]

New York: E. P. Dutton, 1947. First Edition, First Printing. Hardcover with Dust Jacket.

EXCEPTIONAL AUTHORIAL INSCRIPTION REFERENCING THE CREATION OF MIKE HAMMER.

Inscribed by Mickey Spillane to Michael Preston, with a personal reference to the novel's composition on an L. C. Smith typewriter in 1946 and the continuing legacy of his celebrated detective.

THE NOVEL THAT INTRODUCED MIKE HAMMER.
Mickey Spillane's explosive debut introduced private investigator Mike Hammer, one of the defining characters of postwar American crime fiction. Its uncompromising violence, sexual frankness, rapid pacing, and vengeance-driven narrative distinguished it from earlier detective fiction and established Spillane as a major commercial force in the genre.

This first printing is particularly desirable for Spillane's substantial inscription, which recalls the circumstances of the novel's creation and connects the recipient directly to the author's reflections on Mike Hammer's origins.

PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS: FIRST PRINTING IN THE ORIGINAL GUILT EDGE MYSTERY JACKET.
Original publisher's black cloth, lettered in red. Octavo, 9.0 × 6.0 inches; 218 pages.
First Edition, First Printing, as stated. Original illustrated dust jacket bearing the Guilt Edge Mystery imprint and publisher's $2.50 price.

CONDITION: VERY GOOD / GOOD DUST JACKET.
Binding tight and square, with light rubbing to the spine ends and corners. Text block clean, with uniform age-toning. Original unclipped dust jacket shows edge chipping, small losses at the spine ends, and a light damp stain to the rear panel. Several older internal tape repairs along the folds. Despite these defects, the jacket retains strong color and presents attractively in a protective Mylar sleeve.

LITERARY SIGNIFICANCE: A LANDMARK OF POSTWAR AMERICAN HARDBOILED FICTION.
Published in 1947, I, the Jury introduced Mike Hammer, whose ruthless pursuit of vengeance represented a more violent and confrontational development of the American private-eye tradition. Spillane's terse dialogue, rapid pacing, sexual frankness, and explosive conclusions helped establish a commercially influential style of postwar crime fiction.

The novel became a major bestseller and was adapted for film in 1953, starring Biff Elliot. Its success established Spillane as one of the most widely read American crime writers of the twentieth century.

This copy is particularly appealing because Spillane's inscription recalls the book's origins, connecting a landmark first edition to the author's own account of its creation.

Full Inscription:
To Michael Preston, Great to say hello!
Here's where it all got started on an old L.C. Smith typewriter in 1946 — and Mike Hammer still goes on!
Best of luck and love
for the new year —
Sincerely,
Mickey Spillane
