HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE --
Ralph Henry Barbour was the most influential voice in early 20th-century juvenile sports fiction, eventually producing over 100 novels that defined the 'school spirit' genre. Before Barbour, most 'boys' books' were centered on frontier adventure or rags-to-riches morality tales. 'The Half-Back' shifted the focus to the campus, making teamwork, coaching, and fair play the new American virtues.

This 1899 first edition captures American football in its formative, more brutal years, as well as the 'Gilded Age' introduction of golf to the American public. Clinedinst’s illustrations provide a rare visual record of late 19th-century athletic uniforms and equipment.
