THE SCIENCE OF CANNONS

A Treatise of Artillery [Facsimile of the 1780 Third Edition] [Illustrated with Folding Plates]

Ontario, Canada: Museum Restoration Service / Free Range Press, 1977.
THE MANUAL THAT TAUGHT AN EMPIRE TO FIRE ITS GUNS.
Originally published in 1757 and substantially expanded through later editions, John Muller's A Treatise of Artillery was the most influential English-language artillery manual of the eighteenth century.

This carefully produced 1977 facsimile reproduces the enlarged 1780 third edition, preserving the detailed technical text, folding plates, and color frontispiece that made the work indispensable to British and American military officers. Muller's treatise served as a practical handbook for artillery construction, deployment, gunnery, and military engineering during the era of the American Revolution.

The volume presents a comprehensive survey of eighteenth-century artillery practice, including cannon design, powder theory, carriages, mortars, ammunition, transportation systems, and battlefield deployment. Of particular appeal are the numerous folding technical plates illustrating guns, limbers, wagons, fortifications, and artillery equipment. These engravings transformed the original work from a theoretical manual into a practical working reference used by generations of military professionals.
