The Young Brothers Massacre [Illustrated Police Training Edition; Self-Published Account of America's Deadliest Peace Officer Massacre]
Springfield, Missouri: Springfield Publishing Company, 1932.
THE GUNFIGHT THAT CHANGED POLICING
Published only a year after the events it records, this uncommon self-published account documents the notorious Young Brothers Massacre of January 2, 1932, near Springfield, Missouri, when six law-enforcement officers were killed during a failed raid on the farm hideout of brothers Harry and Jennings Young.
Written by Judge John R. Woodside and prepared specifically for police departments and law-enforcement schools, the volume represents one of the earliest extended case studies of a major American police disaster.
Woodside presents a detailed narrative of the raid, the deaths of the officers, the siege, and the extensive manhunt that followed. Numerous photographs, scene reconstructions, diagrams, and tactical analyses transform the work from simple reportage into an instructional manual intended for police training.
The result is an unusual hybrid of true crime narrative, criminological study, and practical law-enforcement literature. Included is a three-page photocopy of a 1987 handwritten letter in which a Missouri resident proposes a farm property as a possible filming location for a motion-picture adaptation of the story, illustrating the continuing fascination surrounding the case more than half a century later.
PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Publisher's original pictorial paper wrappers. Quarto-format booklet measuring approximately 6 1/8 by 9 1/4 inches. 80 pages. Illustrated throughout with halftone photographs, crime-scene images, portraits, maps, and tactical diagrams. Printed on inexpensive newsprint stock.
+++ Includes a laid-in three-page photocopy letter dated 22 March 1987 discussing the possibility of using a Missouri farm as a film location based on the events described in the book.
CONDITION: Original wraps show moderate to heavy wear with edge loss, corner creasing, dog-eared corners, rubbing, and handling wear. Spine heavily worn and stabilized with modern clear archival tape. Several interior leaves show old tape reinforcement at margins. Newsprint remains surprisingly supple and readable.
HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE —
The Young Brothers Massacre occupies a notable place in American law-enforcement history and is frequently cited as one of the deadliest incidents involving peace officers during the early twentieth century.
Produced almost immediately after the event, Woodside's account captures contemporary interpretations of the tragedy before later retellings and historical reassessments emerged. It reflects the growing effort during the 1930s to analyze police failures and develop formalized tactical training from real-world incidents.
