 Few families have shaped modern jazz as profoundly as the Heath brothers. Bassist Percy Heath, a founding member of the Modern Jazz Quartet, helped define the elegance and restraint of cool jazz, while saxophonist Jimmy Heath emerged as one of bebop's most respected composers, arrangers, and improvisers. Together with drummer Albert "Tootie" Heath, they formed one of jazz's most enduring musical families.

Tom Copi devoted much of his career to documenting the musicians who transformed postwar American jazz. Rather than formal studio portraits, his performance photographs preserve the interaction between artists, audiences, and the energy of live performance.
