 Lewis Hine and Berenice Abbott occupy complementary positions in the history of American documentary photography. Hine used the camera to record labor, immigration, industry, and social conditions, while Abbott became particularly associated with the transformation of New York City and the visual culture of modern urban life.

This 1984 exhibition placed their work together around the theme of a changing America, making the announcement a compact piece of photographic exhibition history as well as ephemeral documentation of Abbott’s later career.
