Day Horse and Night Horse [Pair of Original Four-Color Screenprints — Matching No. 183/500, Signed]

London: Merivale Editions, [c.1986].

DAY AND NIGHT — A MATCHED PAIR OF BRITISH SCREENPRINTS.

A striking companion pair of original screenprints by British printmaker Cathi Whiting, contrasting equine imagery through the visual languages of day and night. Day Horse places a monumental decorated horse around a stylized landscape, while Night Horse turns toward celestial imagery of stars, moon, and the night sky.

The two prints are especially appealing as a set: each is number 183 of 500, pencil signed and titled by Whiting, and each remains with its original publisher's folder. According to the Merivale documentation, the four-color screenprints were printed by Whiting herself on 240 gsm Rivoli paper at her studio in Helpringham, Lincolnshire.

PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS:
TWO ORIGINAL ARTIST-PRINTED SERIGRAPHS.
Printed in four colors on 240 gsm Rivoli paper each sheet measures approximately 11.125 by 11.25 inches, with an image approximately 6.5 inches square and pencil numbered 183/500, titled, and signed Cathi Whiting.

Both prints are housed individually in their original titled folding paper folders issued by Merivale Editions, London containing biographical and production notes identifying Whiting and explaining the printing of the editions.

CONDITION: FINE PRINTS IN ORIGINAL PUBLISHER'S FOLDERS.
The two screenprints are Fine, clean and bright, with strong impressions and colors. The original publisher's folders are also Fine. The brown Day Horse folder shows only a hint of surface soiling to the front. An exceptionally well-preserved pair.

BRITISH PRINTMAKING — ARTIST, IMAGE, AND IMPRESSION.
Cathi Whiting was born in Ashdown Forest, Sussex, in 1957 and trained in fine art and printmaking at Winchester School of Art. The Merivale folder records her later work in London editioning fine-art prints for other artists before establishing a printmaking studio in Lincolnshire.

Whiting's direct involvement in producing Day Horse and Night Horse makes the pair notable examples of late twentieth-century British studio printmaking: original screenprints produced by the artist rather than photomechanical reproductions.

Merivale Editions, associated with Peter Sampson, was active in London fine-print publishing during this period. Its projects included Edward Bawden's 1988 Fifteen Engravings 1927–1929, represented in the British Museum. The Yale Center for British Art also holds material relating to Sampson's 1989 talk on Merivale Editions to the Oxford Guild of Printers.
